Aduna – a venture involving Ericsson and telecom giants AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon – has announced plans to deliver the first standardised network APIs for Number Verification and SIM Swap in the US by 2025.
The collaboration marks a step toward unifying carrier-grade security solutions, aiming to reduce fraud risks and streamline authentication processes for enterprises and developers.
This initiative represents the first time America’s three largest mobile operators have jointly supported standardised, open network APIs. By fostering interoperability, the partnership seeks to drive innovation across sectors such as financial services, e-commerce, and digital identity, while positioning the US as a leader in the global API economy.
Aduna network APIs target fraud and streamline security
The Number Verification API will enable developers to authenticate users by securely verifying mobile numbers through operator networks, mitigating risks like fraudulent SMS activities. Meanwhile, the SIM Swap API adds protection against unauthorised SIM swaps, a common tactic in account takeover fraud.
Both APIs will be available nationwide via Aduna’s platform in 2025.
“Aduna is thrilled to provide developers with access to aggregated CAMARA network APIs from AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon,” said Anthony Bartolo, CEO of Aduna.
“This pivotal moment for the mobile ecosystem demonstrates not only the importance of collaboration, but also the reality of global coverage capabilities. Our strategy of redefining connectivity is unlocking faster, carrier-backed authentication at scale.”
Industry leaders hail collaborative effort
Telecom executives have emphasised the initiative’s potential to reshape digital security and innovation.
“Operating in the modern era requires robust security and widespread connectivity,” said Yigal Elbaz, Senior VP of Technology and Network CTO at AT&T. “This collaboration makes our network – along with all participating networks – into a platform that offers advanced capabilities, adding significant value for customers across the developer ecosystem.”
Dan Thygesen, SVP of Product, Partnerships & Growth and Head of Wholesale & Innovation at T-Mobile, commented: “Network APIs such as Number Verification can unlock new features and capabilities that benefit the user experience and protect sensitive data.
“We are looking forward to giving our partners and application developers the ability to implement the future of passwordless, device-based authentication and protect their information and assets.”
Verizon’s Srini Kalapala, SVP of Technology and Product Development at Verizon, added: “Our 5G network is the backbone of innovation. These APIs unlock opportunities for businesses to improve customer experiences and leverage real-time connectivity.”
Aduna aims to unify global network APIs
Launched in September 2024, Aduna aggregates network APIs from global operators under a unified platform built on the CAMARA open-source project, backed by the GSMA and Linux Foundation. The venture aims to catalyse worldwide innovation by enabling developers to create applications that function seamlessly across any network.
Bartolo noted that the 2025 API rollout will set the stage for “global interoperability and driving industry-wide transformation,” emphasising Aduna’s role in making advanced network capabilities accessible.
The initiative not only addresses critical security challenges but also reduces reliance on fragmented verification methods. By standardising carrier-grade solutions, Aduna and its partners aim to bolster customer trust and spur new use cases in IoT, healthcare, and smart cities.
As the API ecosystem evolves, this collaboration could serve as a blueprint for international telecom alliances—further embedding network APIs as pillars of digital innovation.
