Singtel and Qualcomm have completed a successful Proof of Concept (POC) for a Wi-Fi gateway powered by AI. The industry-first POC tested multiple devices and applications using Qualcomm’s Smart Traffic Classifier, part of the Networking AI Suite embedded in the Dragonwing Wi-Fi 7 platform.

The results demonstrated up to a 50% reduction in average latency for applications like online gaming, video streaming, and voice or video calls in congested environments, providing a significant user experience improvement.

Following this milestone, Singtel has announced initiatives to commercialise the AI-driven capability across its markets, with Singapore as the launchpad. The company will also leverage Qualcomm’s NPro 7 and N7 platforms to unlock further AI advancements aimed at further enhancing customer satisfaction.

Jorge Fernandes, Group CTO at Singtel, commented: “In today’s hyper-connected world where households rely heavily on uninterrupted high-speed connectivity for work, entertainment, and the operation of smart home devices, effective traffic management is imperative.

“Through this collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, we’re setting new benchmarks in home connectivity by harnessing the power of AI to deliver seamless bandwidth allocation and energy optimisation that will boost our customers’ connectivity experience.”

The AI-enabled home Wi-Fi gateway is poised to bolster Singtel’s ongoing efforts to address rising consumer demands amid the proliferation of data-intensive activities, cloud applications, and connected devices in smart homes.

The collaboration aligns with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Singtel and Qualcomm aimed at fostering technological solutions to improve daily life for users across Asia and beyond. Qualcomm’s expertise in AI at the network edge presents a strategic advantage for realising this vision.

ST Liew, VP & President, QC Taiwan, SEA and ANZ at Qualcomm, said: “We are thrilled to collaborate with Singtel Singapore on this groundbreaking AI gateway initiative, marking a significant step forward in our shared vision of harnessing the power of AI at the network edge.

“By leveraging Qualcomm Technologies’ AI capabilities, we aim to revolutionise connectivity and enhance user experiences. We look forward to continuing our work with Singtel Group to bring transformative AI solutions to market.”

Looking ahead, Singtel plans to roll out its AI-powered gateway to other regions within its footprint after successfully debuting the technology in Singapore. This implementation will create smarter networks optimised for energy-efficient bandwidth allocation, enabling services like Wi-Fi 7, low-latency gaming, and next-gen 10Gbps broadband offerings.

This new rollout is part of Singtel’s broader commitment to staying ahead in the connectivity space. Last year, Singtel became the first fixed broadband provider to implement the Broadband Forum’s TR-369 standard for Wi-Fi management. The standard enables Singtel to manage multi-vendor customer premise equipment seamlessly, accelerate the deployment of cutting-edge technologies, and improve device-to-network interoperability for customers.

As the demand for ultra-fast and reliable internet continues to surge, the introduction of next-generation AI-enabled gateways will help to transform traditional Wi-Fi systems into intelligent solutions that add substantial value to end users.
