Semtech has achieved a breakthrough in fibre broadband with the launch of its new asymmetric 50G PON OLT chipset.
This industry-first solution is fully-compliant with International Telecommunication Union (ITU) standards and comprises the GN7161, GN7153BW, and GN25L80B chipsets. This breakthrough will accelerate the global commercial deployment of 50G PON technology by enabling the development of compact, power-efficient, and fully standard-compliant SFP-DD triple-generation modules.
Increasing demand for bandwidth across the globe presents a critical hurdle for the fibre broadband market. The rise of bandwidth-intensive applications such as AI and cloud gaming are pushing existing network infrastructure to its limits.
50G PON technology offers a promising solution to these bandwidth and infrastructure challenges, but early prototypes of 50G triple-generation OLTs have suffered from high power consumption and a lack of adherence to established industry standards.
Semtechβs new chipset aims to address these issues through the implementation of advanced mixed-signal equalisation and a high degree of integration.
This approach significantly reduces power consumption and, coupled with chip-scale packaging, enables a compact SFP-DD module form factor. A compact design is crucial for OLT systems to meet stringent requirements regarding size, heat dissipation, and port density to facilitate scalable deployment across carrier networks.
Full compliance with ITU standards ensures seamless integration into existing carrier networks that already support GPON, XGSPON, and HS-PON standards. This backward compatibility is vital for a smooth and cost-effective transition to the next generation of broadband.
Jacqui Adams, Senior Product Line Manager at Semtech, commented: βAs carriers prepare for the first large-scale deployments of asymmetric 50G PON in the US and Asia, our new chipset is a game-changer. Carriers can now plan their network upgrades with confidence, offer their clients a range of new services and know they have a solution that meets strict network standards.β
The ability to seamlessly integrate this new technology into existing infrastructure will be a key factor in accelerating the adoption of 50G PON and ensuring that everyone can benefit from the blistering speeds and capabilities that it offers.
This enhanced connectivity will unlock a new era of digital services and experiences, from enhanced cloud computing and immersive gaming to the widespread adoption of next-gen AI applications.
