Jio partners with tech giants to develop AI telecom network platform

Jio Platforms has formed an AI telecom network alliance with AMD, Cisco, and Nokia, with the announcement made during last month’s MWC.

The partnership aims to develop an Open Telecom AI Platform that will integrate artificial intelligence capabilities across network operations- a move that comes as telecom operators seek technological solutions to manage increasingly complex infrastructure demands.

The multi-company initiative comes at a important time for the telecom industry, which faces increasing challenges in network management, security, and profitability. The new platform is designed as a “solutions-oriented, multi-domain intelligence framework” with a focus on enhancing network security and efficiency.

Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio said, “The initiative goes beyond automation – it’s about […] AI-driven, autonomous networks that adapt in real-time, enhance user experiences, and create new service and revenue opportunities […].”

The proposed AI telecom network platform from Jio will be LLM-agnostic, using open APIs to optimise its functionality. It will incorporate various AI approaches including agentic AI, large language models, domain-specific small language models, and traditional machine learning techniques.

Each partner brings specific expertise to the project. AMD is to contribute computing technology, with Chair and CEO Lisa Su noting that its “broad portfolio of high-performance CPUs, GPUs, and adaptive computing solutions” will help create “more secure, efficient, and scalable networks.”

Cisco will provide integrated solutions from its technology stack, including networking, computing, AI defence, and analytics. “The collaboration harnesses the expertise of industry leaders to change networks with AI,” stated Chuck Robbins, Chair and CEO of Cisco.

Nokia adds RAN, Core, fixed broadband, and IP and optical transport. Pekka Lundmark, President and CEO at Nokia, said the platform will help “optimise and monetise network investments through enhanced performance, security, operational efficiency, automation and greatly improved customer experience.”

The platform will be implemented with Jio before potentially expanding globally. The companies hope to create a “replicable reference architecture and deployable solution for the broader global service provider industry.”

This market move could position India as an early adopter of comprehensive AI integration in telecommunications. Industry analysts suggest several potential benefits from such AI telecom network integration:

• Enhanced threat detection and automated security responses
• Predictive maintenance to prevent network outages
• More efficient resource allocation and energy management
• Improved customer experience through anticipatory service adjustments

However, challenges remain. Questions about standardisation, interoperability with existing systems, data privacy, and the practical implementation timeline will need to be addressed. The companies have not specified when the platform will be fully operational.

The partnership reflects the growing trend toward AI adoption in telecommunications, with major players like Jio viewing artificial intelligence as essential rather than optional. As 6G development progresses, such AI integration may become the foundation for next-generation networks capable of supporting increasingly data-intensive applications.

For service providers worldwide, the Open Telecom AI Platform could offer a blueprint for addressing common challenges, though its effectiveness will ultimately depend on successful implementation and measurable improvements in network performance and business outcomes.
