During the four days of MWC Barcelona 2025, household name technology brands gather to exhibit the latest in offerings, services, and products. Among the biggest show floor presences, Huawei has run a series of presentations, discussions, and product demos that involve telecoms carriers, the company’s industry partners, and telecoms leaders from around the world.
High on the agenda has been discussion of 5G and 5G-A (or ‘5G plus’) networks and AI, and the opportunities the two technologies’ symbiotic relationship offers to businesses, the public sector, and governments around the world.
Among the solutions announced by the Shenzen-based multinational are:
- AI-centric network solutions – specialist services designed for telecoms carriers that help them build networks responsive to the demands of AI applications, and maintain smooth, cohesive end-user experiences.
- AI-powered O&M (observations and measurements) – the use of AI ‘under the hood’ to provide carrier networks of Level 4 autonomy.
- AI-to-X – the company’s catchall term for AI-to-consumers, business, and homes.
The increased availability of high-quality, open-source AI models means network users are iterating more quickly on their offerings, placing increased demand on carriers. Carriers can deploy the same types of technology in response to ensure stability and reliability in infrastructure and service provision.
Evolving 5G networks
By the end of 2024, there were more than 2.1 billion 5G users around the world, and the numbers continue to grow as networks upgrade infrastructure on the ground (and in the skies). Huawei has been working with carriers to develop 5G solutions in hardware and software, helping them transition from mobile internet companies to suppliers of mobile capable of supporting the demands placed on networks for AI.
In 2024, pioneering carriers began launching commercial 5G-Advanced (5G-A) in over 200 cities around the world. Consumers can use 5G-A’s enhanced capabilities to get better experiences when live-streaming, gaming, and while travelling. For carriers, 5G-A is an opportunity to go beyond traditional pricing and service offerings to start monetising in a more personalised way, depending on the user’s particular needs.
Huawei works with carriers in China, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific to explore the new monetisation models, defining application scenarios (gamer, live-streamer, high throughput, guaranteed low latency periods, etc.) to build an increased user base and offer customers various permanent or temporary service types, according to need. The shift of focus from connectivity and/or data allowances to experience-based pricing tiers improves user experience and increases carrier revenue.
AI-centric networks for Huawei telecoms
Huawei launched its AI-Centric Network solution during MWC in Barcelona, comprising of options designed to help carriers upgrade their ICT network infrastructure to meet new demands placed on bandwidth, latency, coverage, and O&M – something that’s been brought about by the increase in numbers and complexity of AI applications. The AI-Centric Network is designed to help reshape telecoms networks’ service and business models to take advantage of the new opportunities.
The rapid development of technologies including 5G-A, cloud, and AI, means carriers have the opportunity to change from a role of connectivity service provider to one of digital services provider. Huawei’s newly-announced three-layer technology architecture for carriers is designed to help them enter different business domains and find new opportunities for growth and diversification.
Accelerating industrial intelligence
At this year’s MWC, Huawei’s Enterprise Business demonstrated how different industries can incorporate AI into their specific business models by using Huawei’s industrial intelligence reference architecture. The company presented 83 different industry showcases of its work with customers including telecoms networks, and launched ten new major AI solutions designed to accelerate intelligent transformation for its business partners in different sectors.
Pushing the boundaries of consumer devices and experience
Alongside the telecoms showcases, discussions, and presentations, Huawei’s consumer business showed the latest in its lineup of high-end, fashion-conscious flagship products at the company’s stand, 1H50 in Fira Gran Via Hall 1 at MWC25. Channel partners, vendors, and consumers saw demos of and had hands-on time with Huawei’s latest innovations: fold-able phones, fitness- and health-focused wearables, photography, tablets and creative software eco-systems.
