Ericsson has been recognised for its RAN automation UI, winning the prestigious Red Dot Award for Design Concept 2024 in the ‘Interaction, UI, and User Experience’ category. The award celebrates Ericsson’s work on the user experience for its rApps portfolio, a suite of RAN automation applications built on O-RAN Alliance standards.
Ericsson’s winning design centres around the UI of its AI-powered rApps, developed by the company’s Cognitive Network Solutions division. These sophisticated software applications are designed to inject automation into the management and optimisation of Radio Access Networks (RANs) via the Non-Real Time RAN Intelligent Controller.
The rApps portfolio has been crafted to elevate user experience, bolster network performance, and streamline processes through automation. By democratising access to AI and incorporating advanced explainability features that foster trust in AI-driven recommendations, the rApps empower operational transformation within telecoms.
Ericsson’s rApps leverage cutting-edge AI-powered detectors and optimisation algorithms, enabling Communication Service Providers (CSPs) to advance towards autonomous mobile networks.
Developed in close alignment with the Ericsson Design System, the rApps user experience prioritises user needs, addressing their feelings, constraints, and desired functionalities. This user-centric approach extends beyond the applications’ layout and design. The UI incorporates features that connect users with tutorial support, vibrant community forums, feedback mechanisms, and rating tools, ensuring a seamless and enriching experience.
Jean-Christophe Laneri, Head of Cognitive Network Solutions at Ericsson, said:
“We are honoured that the thought and consideration the team has put into making excellent user experience for our rApps has been recognised. Without this focus on usability, and especially the features that seek to help build community and take feedback, the smartest AI technology in the world would not be able to reach its full potential.”
As the industry moves towards increasingly complex network infrastructures, user-centric design will be crucial in unlocking the full potential of these technologies.
“As we finalise our rApps for launch, it is heartening to see it confirmed that we’re on track to create powerful AI-based automation, diagnostics, and optimisation software, and help CSP’s to jump start their network autonomy journey,” Laneri concludes.
