Elisa has revealed plans to deploy Nokia’s Lightspan MF solution for Europe’s first 100G PON trial.

Elisa’s deployment of Nokia’s fibre solution will position it as Europe’s first provider to exhibit 25G, 50G, and 100G Passive Optical Network (PON) services. This initiative emphasises the broadband speeds Elisa intends to achieve across its existing fibre network.

The groundbreaking trial builds on Elisa’s current fibre deployment, showcasing the potential of integrating various PON technologies on the same fibre.

Sami Rajamäki, VP of Network Services at Elisa, said: “Nokia’s fibre solution will help us significantly enhance our fibre network to deliver some of the fastest internet speeds in the world. We’re excited to be the first in Europe to show up to 100G PON speeds in a live fibre network trial and demonstrate the world-class capabilities we can deliver to support the next generation of broadband services.

“By partnering with Nokia, we can showcase our commitment to guaranteeing the best, high-quality services for our customers. History has shown that it is impossible to forecast all the new use cases for greater speeds, i.e. what new 25 to 100G connections will enable in the future, but we know that for example online gaming and industrial users are among the first to benefit from ever faster broadband connections.”

The live demonstration underscores how operators can seamlessly upgrade their fibre networks to satisfy the increasing demand for faster and more dependable connectivity. Nokia stands alone in supporting all next-generation PON options, ranging from 10G to anticipated 100G PON technologies.

Nokia’s Lightspan broadband access platform provides Elisa with the capability to offer some of the swiftest broadband speeds in Europe—up to ten times faster than what most current fibre networks can manage today.

Elisa has deployed Nokia’s Altiplano platform to facilitate 10G XGS-PON deployments. This system aids in the automation, management, scalability, and reliability enhancement of Elisa’s network.

Altiplano will help to equip Elisa for the future’s bandwidth requirements, especially those propelled by AI. According to Nokia Bell Labs’ projections, total AI traffic in Western Europe is expected to hit 91 exabytes per month by 2030.

Matthieu Bourguignon, SVP and Head of Europe for Network Infrastructure at Nokia, commented: “We see demand for high-speed internet access surging in Europe with end users and enterprises alike increasingly seeking reliable, secure, high-quality broadband connectivity.

“Our Lightspan and Altiplano Access platforms give operators like Elisa the tools they need to increase speed, provide superior performance, automate functions, and future-proof its fibre network. Our fibre technology provides the perfect solution for operators that want to quickly increase capacity and flexibly migrate to next-generation fibre technologies.”
