CityFibre has commenced full-fibre network rollouts in all nine of the ‘Project Gigabit’ areas awarded to the company.
The UK Government’s £5 billion Project Gigabit is set to connect over 1.3 million homes and businesses in underserved areas over the next five years. CityFibre, for its part, aims to reach more than eight million premises nationwide and bridge the digital divide across Britain.
CityFibre’s rollout has been made possible by a combination of public and private sector investment. The Government awarded £782 million in subsidies to CityFibre to support the effort, with the company also contributing its own funds to expand coverage beyond what the subsidies support.
Telecoms Minister Sir Chris Bryant said: “No one – no matter where they live or work – should be held back in their personal or professional lives because of lack of digital connectivity.
“Project Gigabit is providing the tools for people up and down the country to prosper in the digital world, allowing communities to stream, work, and learn online with buffer-free broadband.”
The rollout aims to ensure that rural and hard-to-reach communities will not be left behind in the digital age, providing them with access to ultrafast download and symmetrical upload speeds that can transform home and work life.
CityFibre’s efforts are already making a noticeable difference in areas where work has been completed. Among the first connected was Josh Newman, from Grantchester, Cambridgeshire, who now enjoys Vodafone’s 2.2Gbps symmetrical broadband service delivered over CityFibre’s national network.
“I’m a filmmaker and a film lecturer, so I deal with quite large files. But my upload speed used to top out at 18Mbps, which meant that uploading cuts or rushes took a really long time whilst throttling the internet for everyone in the house,” commented Newman.
“With full fibre, I can work much more easily and my wife’s often on video meetings, which are now reliable and high quality. Even with the children online for school work and entertainment, the upgrade has meant our household never has to think about bandwidth or worry about getting online.”
Newman’s experience mirrors the transformative promise of Project Gigabit. Other rural communities in Norfolk and Suffolk have already begun reaping similar benefits, as towns and villages once considered digitally disadvantaged are now among the best-connected in the UK.
The work in Kent enables CityFibre to boast that it’s begun construction in all nine areas awarded to the company under Project Gigabit:
- Cambridgeshire
- Norfolk
- Suffolk
- Hampshire
- Leicestershire and Warwickshire
- East and West Sussex
- Kent
- Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and Milton Keynes
- East Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire
Greg Mesch, CEO of CityFibre, said: “Project Gigabit made the rollout of full fibre broadband to rural and hard-to-reach areas possible and we’ve already seen the difference that full fibre connectivity makes: supercharging small businesses, connecting communities, and powering your local pub.
“Our teams have worked incredibly hard to map routes, lay cables, climb telegraph poles, and engage with local communities as we continue to expand the reach of our network and bring the benefits of full fibre broadband to over 1.3 million premises in hard-to-reach areas and more than eight million premises across the UK.”
CityFibre’s investment in this initiative demonstrates the expanding role of private companies in advancing public digital infrastructure. While the rollout’s immediate focus is on enabling gigabit speeds for rural communities, the broader aim is to future-proof the UK’s broadband infrastructure for decades to come.
