Satellite cellular network provider AST SpaceMobile has further cemented its partnership with telecoms giant Vodafone.

The deal, which runs through 2034, paves the way for Vodafone to integrate space-based cellular connectivity into its primary markets, including offering services to external operators through its Partner Markets programme.

With the expanded partnership, the pair take another step towards achieving their goals of delivering reliable global broadband coverage—especially to currently underserved and remote areas.

Collaborative achievements

Vodafone has been a key player in AST SpaceMobile’s journey since 2018, participating as a three-time investor and a technological partner.

In April 2023, AST SpaceMobile achieved the world’s first space-based voice call using a standard mobile phone. This success was followed by another milestone in June 2023: the first-ever 4G download speeds exceeding 10 Mbps from space. September saw yet another victory with the world’s first 5G voice call from space.

AST SpaceMobile’s innovations have demonstrated download speeds surpassing 20 Mbps on a 5 MHz frequency channel, underscoring the potential for robust bandwidth capabilities for end users.

Vodafone’s active role in these advancements has laid the foundation for more significant strides. The European telecom giant has placed its first order for AST SpaceMobile’s Block 1 BlueBird gateway, a critical infrastructure component of the space-based broadband network.

Bringing space connectivity to Earth’s devices

AST SpaceMobile’s network, supported by low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, aims to connect users outside traditional cellular coverage zones simply by using their standard smartphones. No special hardware or accessories are required on the user’s end.

This straightforward approach hinges on the BlueBird system, where LEO satellites route data to land-based BlueBird gateways. Vodafone’s purchase of the Block 1 BlueBird gateway facilitates integration of the satellite network into Vodafone’s existing infrastructure, enabling seamless routing of voice, video, and data to smartphones.

Looking ahead, AST SpaceMobile is gearing up to deploy its next-generation Block 2 BlueBirds, featuring up to 2,400-square-foot communications arrays designed to deliver up to 10 times the capacity of existing BlueBird satellites.

When operational, these latest satellites are expected to achieve peak transmission speeds of 120 Mbps, unlocking possibilities for high-bandwidth applications such as video streaming and full-scale internet browsing.

A growing satellite cellular network alliance

Vodafone is one of over 45 mobile network operators worldwide to ink agreements with AST SpaceMobile, collectively covering an estimated 2.8 billion existing subscribers. Major telecom players, including AT&T, Verizon, Orange, Telefonica, and Telstra, have partnered with AST SpaceMobile to explore space-driven connectivity solutions.

During 2024, AST SpaceMobile deepened its connections with strategic industry players and investors. Alongside Vodafone, key backers include AT&T, Verizon, and Google. The company has also secured significant contracts with the US Government, both directly and through partnerships with prime contractors.

As part of its growing network, AST SpaceMobile counts telecom giants like Rakuten Mobile, Bell Canada, Saudi Telecom Company, Zain KSA, Etisalat, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, and Telkomsel among its clients. It has also forged partnerships with emerging markets operators like Smart Communications, Africell, and others, demonstrating a commitment to truly global connectivity.

Through a robust portfolio of intellectual property and patented technology, AST SpaceMobile is building the only global broadband network designed to directly connect with unmodified mobile phones.

The next step is turning satellite cellular network achievements into everyday utility for billions of users. With the new agreement in place, AST SpaceMobile and Vodafone aim to deliver solutions that make dependable cellular broadband a reality for all.
