Vodafone has successfully completed the world’s first space-based video call using everyday 4G and 5G smartphones.
The landmark call showcases a technological marvel: the ability to deliver a full mobile broadband experience directly from satellites to unmodified smartphones.
Unlike current satellite-based services, which often require expensive hardware like specialised satellite phones or dishes, Vodafone’s new solution enables users to seamlessly switch between land-based and satellite networks using their standard devices—creating an experience indistinguishable from traditional 4G or 5G mobile services.
A video call from the Welsh mountains to space
The milestone was achieved at Vodafone’s new space-to-land gateway that receives and processes signals sent between user smartphones and specialised BlueBird satellites, operated in partnership with AST SpaceMobile.
From a rugged, mountainous region in mid-Wales – known for its lack of mobile broadband – Vodafone engineer Rowan Chesmer made the historic video call to the Vodafone Chief Executive Margherita Della Valle.
Margherita Della Valle said: “Vodafone’s job is to get everyone connected, no matter where they are. Our advanced European 5G network will now be complemented with cutting-edge satellite technology.
“This will help to close the digital divide, supporting people from all corners of Europe to keep in touch with family and friends, or work, as well as ensuring reliable rural connectivity in an emergency.”
Tim Peake, the renowned astronaut who became the first British person to conduct a spacewalk during his six-month stint on the International Space Station, joined the celebration of this achievement.
“Having spent six months on the International Space Station, I can fully appreciate the value in being able to communicate with family and friends from remote and isolated locations,” Peake remarked.
The achievement has also drawn the attention of policymakers focused on narrowing the digital divide.
Sir Chris Bryant, the UK’s Telecoms Minister, commented: “Since coming into office, I have put digital growth and inclusion at the top of my political agenda, harnessing the power of tech innovation to connect the most hard-to-reach parts of Britain.
“I am thrilled to see Vodafone leveraging satellite connectivity and 5G to help us plug coverage gaps and improve lives across the country.”
Ensuring resilient communications on Earth
The Vodafone-BlueBird satellite service operates from low Earth orbit, working alongside Vodafone’s existing land-based infrastructure. This dual-network approach is designed to ensure connectivity in regions where terrestrial alternatives are impractical, such as high-altitude mountainous terrains, remote fields, and even open seas.
Described as a “bolt-on technology,” the service is not designed to replace mobile networks but to enhance them by filling in coverage gaps. Together, the terrestrial and satellite systems will offer a robust communications infrastructure capable of meeting Europe’s connectivity needs anytime, anywhere.
In addition to bridging existing gaps, the system strengthens overall network resilience, ensuring communities stay connected during emergencies where terrestrial networks may fail.
