Rocket Lab acquiring the Iridium telecom network creates a vertically-integrated satellite connectivity operator.

Rocket Lab will purchase Iridium Communications in a transaction valuing the enterprise at $8 billion. The cash and stock deal prices Iridium shares at $54 each. The combined entity merges launch operations and spacecraft manufacturing with an established low Earth orbit satellite network.

Network operations and direct-to-device expansion

Maritime fleets, the aviation industry, and heavy industrial organisations operating in remote off-the-grid locations rely on secure satellite connectivity. Iridium’s low Earth orbit network delivers an alternative positioning, navigation, and timing architecture.

Enterprise systems can fallback to this secondary synchronisation layer when the global positioning system or other global navigation satellite systems become degraded or unavailable. For example, cargo shipping operators deploy these dual-band terminals on vessel superstructures to maintain telemetry feeds reporting engine diagnostics and environmental variables back to onshore data centres.

Rocket Lab plans to build upon the existing network to pioneer space-based services and scale into untapped markets. The combined company will support the development and deployment of the next-generation constellation.

Expanding the network includes deploying direct-to-device capabilities known as Iridium NTN Direct. National security agencies and emergency responders will integrate this capacity to ensure reliable communications where traditional networks are unavailable or compromised.

Field technicians operating in remote extraction sites currently carry dedicated satellite handsets. Transitioning to direct-to-device standards also allows enterprises to deploy standard commercial smartphones that switch natively between local cell towers and low Earth orbit relays.

The benefits of in-house launch capabilities

Rocket Lab operating its own rocket fleet eliminates third-party launch costs for constellation deployment and replenishment. The transaction captures launch margin internally and guarantees orbital access as external launch capacity tightens.

Matt Desch, CEO at Iridium, says: “As the worlds of space and terrestrial communications continue to converge, more critical services will depend on space-based capabilities. Success will come from those who can bring new innovations to space quickly and sustain them over time as efficiently as possible.

“We’re excited about being able to accelerate the next generation of IoT, aviation, maritime, PNT, and national security capabilities, and pursue new innovative applications as part of Rocket Lab—a fully integrated, end-to-end space company.”

Controlling the entire hardware lifecycle from factory assembly to orbital insertion protects telecom wholesale contracts from external supply chain disruptions.

Telecoms infrastructure operates on strict hardware refresh cycles. When external launch providers delay missions, network gaps appear in coverage maps, triggering service level agreement penalties. Internalising the launch manifest shields the consolidated operator from these specific enterprise risks.

Strong financial foundation

The acquisition provides Rocket Lab with recurring cash flow streams from an established communications customer base.

Iridium generated $871.7 million in revenue during 2025. The network operator achieved $495 million in operating earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation, equating to a 57 percent margin. This capital provides funding to develop emerging defense and commercial space services.

Sir Peter Beck, Founder and CEO of Rocket Lab, commented: “This is a defining moment for the space industry and the start of a new era of strategic, accelerated growth for Rocket Lab and Iridium. Iridium has built the gold standard in secure, safety critical global satellite connectivity. It is relied upon by maritime fleets, the aviation industry, governments, and heavy industrial organisations who operate in the most remote off-the-grid locations.

“By marrying Iridium’s deep heritage, trusted infrastructure, and highly sought-after spectrum with Rocket Lab’s extensive and proven launch and manufacturing capabilities, we have the capability to unlock entirely new markets. We will go far beyond maintaining a legacy; we are going to build upon it to pioneer next-generation space applications and deliver sought-after capabilities to existing and new customers.”
